When I first met Laura Davidson she had just moved to Portland, TX from Pennsylvania and was inquiring about our local American Sewing Guild group. Laura has been an active ASG member for 20+ years in 4 different states and within a few years she became President of our local Corpus Christi Chapter. She not only grew our guild in the 3 yrs she was President we also received the American Sewing Guild LARGE CHAPTER OF THE YEAR award the last year of her term. She also taught a series of classes at the national convention that year. Laura has been a great supportive friend to me and I think you will be very inspired by some of the things she does. Here is a little interview and then keep scrolling for some great pictures of some of Laura's latest work.
First tell us about your family - Married 26 yrs to Adrian as he chased jobs all over the country in the oil industry. Daughters: Michelle, 25 lives in Chicago, Leigh, 22 just moved to Phoenix from NYC.
What is your professional sewing background? Ballet Costumer, Expo and Guild teacher specializing in fabric, pattern fitting, pants and fun! More recently sharing my love of wearable art techniques! Originally educated and worked in Business Management. I even worked for the Mayor of Chicago years ago!
What type of sewing do you do? Better yet, what kind of sewing do I hate to do! Hand work, Home Dec, Heirloom, Doll Making (sorry Patty), Lingerie, Custom Sewing (for hire), alterations, mending!
What was your most challenging project? See my hand couched wool coat done 15 years ago at: http://www.danamarie.com/gallery/1002.htm I had a impacted tooth and medicine that kept me up for 2 days while I did the couching with invisible thread…..never by hand again!
What do you like to sew best? Beautiful fine unusual natural fabric, either bought during my travels or custom made by me, into a garment that fits and flatters and take 10 years off this chopped up body (2 joint replacements).
What are you currently working on? Quick, easy, artsy embellishment and remodeling techniques for a class I am teaching for local quilt guild in Aug. Everyday I have some dyeing, rusting, painting, stenciling or chopping up going on with cast offs from my closet or the thrift store!
What was your worst sewing experience? Using very old red and black piping in a pieced art to wear oriental cotton jacket that ran when washed! Saved with Clorox bleach pen and fabric markers!
What kind of sewing machine do you have? Machines! Janome 1100, Bernina 440, Pfaff Serger 4872, Baby Lock Embellisher, Viking 950, Singer Featherweight.
Have you had a funny sewing experience you would like to share? Sewing myself into a too large dress 5 minutes before going on as last minute replacement for a no show dancer in the party scene of a semi-professional production of The Nutcracker Ballet! I didn't even know the dance - faked it, smiled and hid my feet! But I got to see all my costumes on stage for first time. Costume mistresses never get out of the dressing rooms!
What advice would you give the readers about sewing? Quality, quality, quality! It is not about how much money you spend but how wisely you shop. A great garment and pattern will save you time, frustration and money in the long run!
